"Teachers of the Clubbs Annex, with that spirit of patriotism, which they have displayed on so many occasions, have adopted three little French orphans, this announcement having been made at a recent meeting of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) of School #40. The grades taught by Miss Rosa Bell and Mrs. Quarles have each adopted one of these little friendless children, and the school at large a third." (Pensacola News Journal 5-8-1918)

Mrs. Quarles in the above newspaper article is Miss Ethel White born to Howard Lee White and Lydia Isaacs on March 9, 1882 in Warrington, Florida. Ethel would marry in 1902 to James Quarles. She would become a teacher for the 5th and 6th graders in the four room Annex School located at Guillemard and Gadsden Street near where old Pensacola High School once stood. She would retire in 1921, just three years after this article. She would pass away on May 25, 1975 and was buried in the St. Johns Cemetery in Pensacola. (Information from her daughter Ms. Ruth Runyan).
